Police Beat

Sorry I’ve taken all week to post this but here are the crimes to watch out for on my campus. Don’t let them happen to you.

1. A man exposed himself to a student walking up Maeser Hill Oct. 31. The exhibitionist is described as college age, 5 foot 10, clean-shaven with short, dark hair wearing a green jacket and jeans.
2. An Apple laptop computer was left anonymously in the library with a note attached that read whoever found the laptop could keep it. The laptop was booked into evidence to find the owner and see if he or she wanted to give it away.
3. A student received a random phone call on his cell phone Oct. 24 from someone trying to sell him drugs using slang language. When he replied “What?” the person hung up the phone.
4. A BYU ID card was stolen from a female student’s locker between Oct. 26 and Oct. 28 in the Richard’s Building. There has been $14.85 of unauthorized charges.
6. A female traffic officer attempted to stop a vehicle entering the parking lot by the law school Oct. 27, but the driver sped up. When he was exiting the lot, she knocked on his window, but he ignored her and actually bumped into her with his car and sped off. An officer was able to stop the suspect later, and the case is under review for assault charges.
7. Two female students were issued citations for illegal possession of alcohol and tobacco in Deseret Towers U-Hall Oct. 27
8. An employee who leaves his office in the same way everyday in the Fletcher Building found that his blinds had been closed Oct. 26 He also discovered some gambling Internet sites he had never accessed in his computer history.

These crimes are put in here seriously to warn students so they don’t leave their backpack sitting on a table or leave their doors unlocked in the dorms. I don’t post the crimes about peoples computers and bikes being stolen but each week there a few of those and they’re not that funny. My favorite is the one about a guy getting offered drugs on his cell phone. If that happened to me I would probably just laugh and tell my friends about it. I guess if he reports it he can find the call log and the police can track the phone number but they couldn’t really bust the drug dealer for saying something on a phone.

Energy

Friday morning someone came to one of my classes asking for volunteers to sign up as merit badge counselors for a merit badge pow wow that was going to take place the next day. It was very short notice but I decided I should donate my Saturday morning to helping kids with boy scouts. I was a boy scout and had people donate their time to take us on campouts and teach us a lot of valuable things. The merit badge I signed up for was the energy merit badge. They gave me a booklet said good luck. I read the information they gave me and actually learned a few cool things.

First thing I learned is how to calculate if your house is wasting energy compared to the average household. Take the Kwh you use in a month and multiply it by 3413. Take the CF of gas you use in a month (the number on your bill times 100) and multiply that number by 1030. Add these together to get the BTU’s (British Thermal Units) you consume in a month and divide that number by the square feet of your home.
Example:
400kWH * 3413 = 1,365,200 BTU
1500CF * 1030 = 1,545,000 BTU
total energy = 2,910200 BTU
2,910,200 / 815 sqft = 3571 BTU/sqft

conservative: 5830-7830
average: 7170-10580
wasteful 9750-15830

Find out if you waste energy. To stop wasting energy make sure your windows and doors don’t have drafts, Make sure your attic has at least 1ft of insulation above your ceiling, turn your thermostat down at night and leave your water heater at 120 degrees. Drain about 1 quart from the bottom of your water heater 3 times a year. If you haven’t done it in a long time you may want to drain more. Energy prices are supposed to be going way up so hopefully these tips save you some money.

Police Beat

For those of you that don’t know, I go to school at a private religious school. The campus newspaper does something called, “Police Beat”, each week. It is a list of all police reports made by campus police. My school has been ranked the #1 most sober school in America for the past several years. You can imagine the severity of the crimes commited. I’ve decided to post my weekly favorites each week. Here they are…
1. A student left an envelope containing a check atop a mailbox with a rock on top of the letter. He later found the letter opened on the fire extinguisher with the check missing.
2. The BYU sign was taken from off the railing on the South end of the volleybal court Oct 18 during the BYU/UVSC game. (those darn UVSC hoodlums)
3. University Police found gang symbols on two utility poles in front of the Student Athlete Building and on the traffic light controller box by 800 N.
4. Someone dumped soap in the ASB fountain making it foam bubbles.
5. A couple in Wyview Park has been receiving annoying and disturbing e-mails from relatives dealing with personal marriage matters. (why was this reported to the police?)
6. A person was stopped for a speeding violation by University Police and found that he was not the owner of the vehicle(I bet at this point the police thought they finally had a serious crime on their hands, they were going to get an arrest for the first time). The person didn’t have permission to drive the car. It was returned to the owner who did not want to press charges. (probably his roommate borrowed it without asking)

Halloween Party

Yet another reason why I’m having a hard time being fit; Parties and Church activities. We held a pumpkin carving contest at our apartment last night. We won for the 3rd straight year! The picture is kind of silly. We have our pumpkin crowns on.

Welcome to week 6 of the Stubz Fitness Challenge. We have separated the uncommited from the pack. Give a round of applause to Megan for leading the mileage with 61! That’s more than 10/week. Good job. Andrea had a great week and pulled away as the biggest loser. 9 lbs and almost 7 inches. I hope she took a before picture. If she keeps it up she will have lost 18lbs by the end of the challenge. But, it is still anyone’s game. There are 3 people interested in joing the second round so I will start posting their results along with these results once I start receiving them.
